Simple Steps to Making Pop-Up Cards

Making pop-up cards can be fun and simple. They are great as birthday cards or for other card occasions.

There's various pop-up mechanisms and one of the slightly more challenging ones includes the slide-mechanism pop-up.

Here, I'll be showing you a very simple pop-up technique you can master in minutes. For ease of explanation, I'll just focus on showing you how to make the pop-up mechanism in two examples below. I wouldn't be touching on decorating the front of the card which I'll leave it to your own creativity. :-)

If you have a single-layered cardblank, just be sure to stick an additional piece of cardstock to cover the "hole" created by the pop-up cutout, then you can decorate the front of the card as per usual.

So let's get moving!

    Making Pop Up Cards 1

    1) Create a cardblank with the pink cardstock. Draw two pencil lines, parallel to each other, along the fold of the cardblank. Cut along these two pencil lines.

Note: The length of your cuts will determine the distance of your pop-up from your background. The longer the cuts, the farther away your pop-up item will be.

Lift up the flap and press it downwards. Crease it and return it to the original position.

Flip the card over, lift up the flap and once again, press it downwards and crease it. Return it to the original position.

    2) Open up the cardblank. From the back of the cardblank, use your finger to gently push the flap inwards. The pop-up mechanism is created.

    3) It's time to decorate the "background". Open up the card and doodle with black pen.

    4) Piece together a paper cupcake with the patterned paper and gold cardstock. For added visual interest, ink the edges of the torn gold cardstock with ink-pad.

Adhere the "cupcake" to the lower-end of the pop-up mechanism. It's done!

    3) To cover up the missing "shoes", create a tag as a "cover-up". To create the tag, cut out a design from the patterned paper. Mat it onto a piece of blue cardstock. Doodle a border on the blue cardstock using the black pen.

Adhere the tag to the front-bottom of the photo cut-out.

    4) Draw two pencil lines, parallel to each other, along the fold of the cardblank. Cut along these two pencil lines.

Lift up the flap and press it downwards. Crease it and return it to the original position.

Flip the card over, lift up the flap and once again, press it downwards and crease it. Return it to the original position.

    Making Pop Up Card 5

    5) Open up the cardblank. From the back, push the flap inwards to create the pop-up mechanism.

    6) Adhere the photo cutout to the lower-end of the pop-up mechanism. And you've created another pop-up using a photo cutout!

    Making Pop Up Card 7

    7) Using a photo cutout for your pop-up card can be super interesting and the recipient is bound to look at it over and over again. Be it to play with the pop-up or to look at the photo.
