Make Birthday Greeting Card

Red Felt Buttons Card

Many make birthday greeting card ideas and examples on this site. For this handmade birthday card, I had somebody in mind when I created it. It’s for my good friend’s younger sister. I was told that she likes red, and that she’s not too fond of floral designs and sweetness. With these in mind, I avoided choosing floral patterned paper, ribbons and lace.

When making birthday cards or greeting cards for others, it’s a good tip to keep in mind of that person’s preferences, likes and dislikes. If you have no idea like I was, try to sound out someone who might know. In my case, my good friend.

Instead, I’ve decided to play around with bolder colors and shapes. My first thought was to go to my recently purchased Sn@p! Color Vibe paper pad by Simple Stories. It’s a 6×6 paper pad filled with polka dots, diagonal stripes, and chevron patterned paper in various happy colors.

As she likes red color, this would easily be the primary color choice. Then I’ve selected blue and yellow to complement the red. For the greeting tag, you can get it by going to my free birthday printables and look under Happy Birthday Printable WordArt. All you need to do is just to print out the sheet, cut out the desired greeting label, and then adhere it to your card. :-)

To add some energy and spark to the card, I’ve tilted the greeting tag at an angle. But I still felt that it was missing out on dimension and texture.

Without bows to add on as I feel it might be deemed too sweet, I had to find something else to add dimension and texture to the card. Looking through my stash, I came across this pack of felt buttons I’ve bought years ago and forgotten about. Immediately I felt they would add great dimension and liveliness to the card, and I was right!

Below are three more cards where I’ve played with patterned paper to create them:

  • Red cardstock –  A5 Textured Cardstock by KCK Craft.
  • Red chevron, yellow diagonally-striped, and blue polka dots patterned paper – Sn@p! Color Vibe 6×6 paper pad by Simple Stories.
  • Yellow and brown felt buttons from Daiso Japan.
  • Birthday greeting tag from my birthday printables, Look under Happy Birthday Printable WordArt.

  • Double-sided tape.
  • Glue gun (optional) for adhering the felt buttons.
